Blu-Ray Shot Across the Bow

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

The Blu-Ray / HD war continues with HD getting another blow from a big retailer.

Woolworth’s has decided to pull its support for HD-DVD and will no longer stock videos that feature the  high-definition DVD format.

Woolworth’s, a U.K. based retailer made the decision based on the strength of sales of Blu-ray DVDs during the holiday shopping season. During that time, discs that used the Blu-Ray format outsold HD DVDs by a 10-to-1 margin.
It is believed the primary reason why Blu-ray outsold HD DVD is because Sony PlayStation 3 devices play Blu-ray discs.

Based on the sales figures, it clearly shows that the market is moving toward one format of high-definition DVD.

The war is not over yet, but it looks like it is coming to a close. The deciding factor will be how much money Toshiba is willing to bleed before they give up a losing battle.

What is Blu-Ray

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Blu-Ray discs can hold up 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc which is 5 to 10 times more than a standard DVD.

Current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead. This blue-violet laser (405nm) that has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm) and makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This greater precision allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space.

Blu-Ray and HD are in a war to capture the market and become the standard, however with 7 of the 8 large major movie studios signing on to Blu-Ray (Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) the writing is on the wall and it looks like Blu-Ray is going to be the winner.

Blu-Ray technology offers the duplication industry a huge opportunity for data management and storage. For the archival process, what once took 10 DVD discs to store, can now only take one. The opportunities for the use Blu-Ray in the duplication industry are endless.

For that reason, Mediatechnics has also adopted Blu-Ray as their standard for customers that need systems capable of storing larger bits of data.

Blu-Ray Winning the Race

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

It looks like Blu-Ray is going to win out over HD.

Blu-Ray has been backed by several large players in the multimedia industry and it looks like Toshiba is going to lose the race even after cutting prices on their HD devices. It’s just not catching on as well as Blu-Ray.

The fight is taking a toll on Toshiba’s bottom line and their stock is taking a beating.

In a recent note sent to clients by research firm Gartner, they say “Price cuts by Toshiba on its HD DVD players will not be enough to save the format from demise at the hands of Blu-ray”.

With the limited titles and exposure of HD, Blu-Ray will triumph and the firm Gartner expects that, by the end of 2008, Blu-ray will be the winning format in the consumer market.

Mediatechnics is always a forward looking company and seeing the writing on the wall, decided to adopt Blu-Ray as their own HD format. On custoemr request, they will manufacture their duplication systems to duplicate Blu-Ray discs using the Blu-Ray burners. The media is still expensive but as the war ends and prices drop, expect Blu-Ray duplication to become much more affordable.
