Iwo Jima DVD / The Last Flag Raiser

MediaShop is pleased to present this extraordinary documentary about the true events surrounding the iconic flag raising on Iwo Jima.
In 1945, an Associated Press photographer snapped a photograph of a flag raising on Iwo Jima. It has become the most reproduced photo in history - and has come to represent American bravery, self-sacrifice and victory.
What many Americans don't know is that there were two flags raised that day. The first flag raising was truly significant to the Marines fighting and dying on the island. It was the first time a foreign flag ever flew on Japanese soil. Hours later, a bigger replacement flag was raised. This second flag was historically insignificant - if not for the famous photo.
Corporal Chuck Lindberg was one of the men who helped raise the first flag. Today, he's an 83 year old man, living in Richfield, MN, whose greatest accomplishment is hidden deep in the shadow of that famous picture. And Marine Corporal Chuck Lindberg is the last living flag raiser from the island of Iwo Jima.
Because of the famous picture, the memory of Iwo Jima has lived on in American history. Now this unique, half-hour documentary serves to set the record straight.

Three years ago, photojournalist Tom Aviles embarked on his long journey to tell Chuck Lindberg’s story. Aviles had previously produced a veteran’s piece called “The Friday Squad,” which won numerous national television awards including a national Emmy after airing on the CBS Evening News.
Aviles’ passion for telling Lindberg’s story inspired two of his closest friends to join him for this documentary. WCCO-TV reporter David Schechter took the responsibility of interviewing many of the veterans, and securing permission for he and Aviles to visit the island of Iwo Jima in December 2002. Upon their return, Lino Rulli came on board bringing eight years of producing experience from his cable show, “Generation Cross.”
The team has interviewed nearly 50 veterans and scholars - in Washington DC, New York, Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Over 100 hours of footage has been shot. And the team has accomplished the majority of the project on their time. They simply have a passion and eagerness to see “The Last Flagraiser” become a reality.
Produced by WCCO Television Productions, "The Last Flagraiser" represents the very best in locally-produced programming. This patriotic story of an American Hero forgotten by history is an emotional story of a former Marine who is finally getting some recognition for his greatest accomplishment. This timely documentary honors the 60th Anniversary of the Iwo Jima flagraising during World War II.
