The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography   July 26, 2010
W. Schroeger (Pittsburgh, PA, US)
This is a must have if you own a home theater with blu-ray capability. I would have liked it even more if on-screen titles were available to describe the locations.

3 out of 5 stars what is the point   July 1, 2010

Great images great quality great scenes but what is the point, what is the message, is it that the earth is beautifull and that humans are spiritual but that we destroy the earth???? As the message was concernd i found it empty and very long take 20 minutes off and it would have been fine but god i was glad it was over and just started to consider if it was really worth the money. Give me planet earth from the BBC anytime. Not one smile of the people in the movie it was kind of deppresing, beautifull images but for some reason I felt deppressed watching it. The only real good scene are the ones of majors cities fast forwarded but at the end also way to long. No story line way to long way to depressing.

5 out of 5 stars BarakAmazing   June 27, 2010

This is one of the most amazing films I have ever seen. It's a non-verbal travel log. Not to sound snobish, but you must see the blue-ray. You will not believe that your TV is capable of producing that much resolution. Certainly a fabulous demo disc.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing film   June 25, 2010
Bridgerish (Mount Airy, MD United States)
This video impressed me so much that after viewing it I thought about it for about a year and then bought it. There is no plot, per se, but it is amazing and keeps your attention. It takes you around the world, viewing the world from new perspectives, like getting a gift every few minutes. Watch it, you will not be sorry.

1 out of 5 stars No Narration... Couldn't believe it.   June 9, 2010

I think the blu ray transfer is good. Some of the images are beautiful, some are horrific (half burned-up bodies...) up close and in HD. A bit of a warning would've been nice on that one. The biggest complaint I have is that this film seems more like a screensaver than anything else because of the lack of narration. Thats right, none at all. I am seeing all of these places yet I don't know anything about most of them. I think it could've been a documentary... instead it was something that someone can fall asleep too. I blame this purchase all on myself, it was in the product info. Most definitely would not have purchased this blu-ray. I didn't want a $21 screen saver, I wanted another Planet Earth....
