Product Description Greg palast has been following the bush family around for years as an investigative reporter for the bbc. This is some of the information he has found as recorded in his book the best democracy money can buy. Studio: Wea-des Moines Video Release Date: 09/28/2004 Run time: 62 minutes
Amazon.com In Bush Family Fortunes: The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, journalist Greg Palast argues persuasively that George W. Bush was allowed into the Air National Guard ahead of other applicants due to his political connections; paints a damning portrait of how over 90,000 Florida voters, predominantly black, were prevented from voting in the 2000 election; discusses the number of government contracts handed out to large corporate donors to Bush's campaign--and that's just the first half-hour. Palast doesn't have the cinematic savvy of Michael Moore, but Bush Family Fortunes acts as a valuable corollary to Fahrenheit 9/11, exploring certain facets of the same argument--specifically, that the Bush family is detrimentally tied to both the Saudi Arabian ruling elite and the American oil industry, with whom they trade influence and money for mutual benefit. Palast's investigations will stir the blood of any Democrat and may raise doubts in some Republicans. -- Bret Fetzer

Behind the Bushes April 3, 2010 William Hefner (EUREKA, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I rented this documentary on DVD last week, and have to admit that it was a bit of a let-down. Despite all of the comments made here about how none of this could have aired on American TV, because the press is somehow censoring it, there wasn't much of anything new in this documentary that I haven't read about or seen on TV before.
I'm definitely no Bush apologist. I would have enjoyed seeing more dirt having been dug up, but most of it just seemed like old news to me. I will say that the presentation and background research seemed to be spot on, otherwise I would not give the video three stars. It definitely lacked the sort of breakthrough evidence that one normally expects from a film selling itself as an expose though.
The most original content contained in the movie is a series of interviews done with those having some sort of connection with former President Bush, although there were a few interviewees that seemingly had no connection with Bush at all. These interviews seemed to mostly imply that the entire political system in the United States (especially Texas) is corrupt, not just the politics of the Bush family. These ended up seeming more like a distraction than being supporting evidence.
I think that the film's biggest flaw is the fact that it spends so much time hopping from one allegation to the next, without having time to delve too deeply into any one of them. I believe that the limitation of trying to cram the contents of his entire book into such a short film led to so much editing that the entire thing seems like a blur at times. It definitely had some good moments and provides an excellent, overall synopsis of some of the many allegations against the Bush family, but it still feels rather incomplete in the end. I kept hoping that this film would deliver some sort of "smoking gun", but was rather disappointed in the end.
This Truth Will WAKE YOU UP!!! November 25, 2008 Cassandra L. Miller (Sunnyvale, California United States) This is a MUST SEE. It's especially a MUST GIVE to all those "sheep" that now make up about 95% of our voting population. It's so unfortunate that people vote on the most persuasive commercials--be they lies or not... This is a QUALITY DOCUMENTARY that exposes a corrupt group of people that we voted for, that offers a strong indication that 9/11 happened BECAUSE of the Bushes "sleeping with the enemy."... To all those who lie to make people hate the great journalist Michael Moore, tell the victims who have fallen for those lies that this documentary is fine research done by a BRITISH journalist, who might very well be showing us how the WORLD now views us. We are the bad guys for the first time in history, and this film makes us aware as to why and what we need to do with our fine upcoming administration to start to fix that! GET IT, AND GET IT FOR ALL THE PEOPLE YOU KNOW!!!
Are we voters or victims? August 11, 2008 M. Grogan (Savanna, Illinois) If you want a clue why other countries hate us, this is for you. As informative as it is depressing, we are reminded it is not who gets the votes-IT'S WHO COUNTS THE VOTES!
Bush Family Fortunes December 21, 2007 Jewel (WA. State) All I have to say is:These people are what's in charge of our past , present, and future. May God help us all.

I was rather skeptical when I dropped this DVD into the ol' player last night. I looked from the packaging like a trashy agitprop documentary, so I was surprised at the professionalism and the relatively calm, matter of fact way that the creators made their point.
In particular, the detailed account of supposedly how black voters were kept from voting in Florida in the 2000 election. I had certainly heard these accusations before, but nothing concrete to back them up. Here, there is the accusation and concrete detail. That really gave me pause for thought.
The only aspect of this documentary I thought was just plain stupid was the way the speech footage of president Bush giving speeches at the start of the Iraq war. It seemed distorted through some cheesy video effect to give is a surreal and untrue quality. Really, I can do without this kind of manipulation. Just stick to the facts the way to see them and make your case without putting me to sleep. That's all I ask from a political documentary.
I can't verify whether or not any or all of what was shown was factual, but at least I was left with something to think about. I thought it was way better than the juvenile and manipulative Fahrenheit 9/11.
Oh yeah, and it's mercifully short. At just about one hour this documentary makes it's points without wasting a lot of time, and that counts for something.
