In the 1950's, the United States started sending small numbers of troops to Vietnam. During the next 25-year period, the ensuing war created some of the strongest tensions ever felt within the US. Almost 3 million US men and women were sent to fight for what was at best a questionable cause. It is estimated that over 2,5 million people on both sides of the war were killed.
The large-scale involvement of the US came under President Lyndon B. Johnson and his Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.
After many efforts made by the US to withdraw their troops, the establishment of a cease-fire was declared on January 27th, 1973. The North Vietnamese conquered South Vietnam in early 1975 defeating the US. It ignored the cease-fire and on July 2nd, 1976, North and South Vietnam were officially united as a single communist state. |
