Missing parts???? July 25, 2010 Fan I love this movie and have watched it several times over the years. When I purchased this, wanting to show it to my children, I had no idea that liberties had been taken! There were parts missing from every section of the movie. When we finished one disk and put in the next, it was like parts of the movie were missing. We had a hard time understanding what was going on because key parts of it were missing. (George and Orry fighting in Mexico, George meeting Constance and getting married, The Mane's going to visit the Hazard's, Madeline escaping her husband (don't even remember what happened!), Ashton going to get rid of her baby in the swamp, Orry's mom dying (or did she), Mont Royal burning down!!! These are all things that were not on the disks that I received. I double and triple checked and they are labeled Book I disk I, Book I disk II, Book II disk I, etc. I was so disappointed and had to keep trying to fill my kids in best I could remember.
still waiting. July 18, 2010 Mr. John R. Browne
i enjoyed the first book[dvd]but i'm still waiting for the full and complete story. Saw it many years ago and thought it was brilliant.
The ultimate in viewing and it should make every American proud of what both sides endured.John.
frequent unintentional hilarity is real reason to buy July 15, 2010 B. Lafave (lakeland , fl) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
don't you love and miss the maxi-series . particularly those of the 1980's . this is a wonderful and involving story . it really is a must own . forget all the stuff folks are shoveling about the serious merits of this collection for a moment though . the funnest thing about this collection is just about everything . it's a howler . i defy you to sit down with your spouse or friends and not find a 1001 reasons to riff on this gloriously hilarious tele-film . a person with male genitals did not write an episode until the 2nd book . and it shows . it's a fun and compelling story to be sure . it's also a riot . the wonders , awe and greatness of Book 3 eclipse even the two previous "master strokes" . Bent says "GET THIS SET , SIRS"!!! and enjoy .
Go South, young man June 29, 2010 A. Edward Azad (Brooklyn, NY) North & South aired on the year I was born. As such, I'm a newcomer to it and didn't know what to expect.
The story is at its strongest when it focuses on George (Read) and Orry's (Swayze) bromance. Orry is my favorite character because he displays the most growth of any of the characters, not to mention a high degree of learning. When confronted by the twelth successive gang of thugs to harass him once he steps off a train (it's like clockwork), Orry finally has enough and whips out a cutlass. Swayze, you rule.
The constant melodrama does grates one's nerves after a while. The villains may as well have neons signs on their heads reading "I'M EVIL." the moment they show up. An exception is Cooper Main (Robert Wagner), who more resembles a frowning block of wood and gets passive-aggressively shoved into villany. The cartoonishly evil Elkanah "West Point" Bent is by far the worst example, though his cohort Ashton (Terry Garber) is more tolerable thanks to her wit and creepy grin. One nitpick is the narrative's tendency to switch Ashton's sociopathy off and on, depending on whether she suddenly needs sympathy from the viewer.
Lesley-Anne Down is the big incentive to keep watching, especially in Book Three when her increased screentime takes the sting out of Swayze's absence. The constant cast changes can get downright confusing as well. Thank heaven Lesley stuck through to the end.
wonderful series June 26, 2010 trish The story was very authentic to the period. The actors were selected with great taste in who could do the characters the best. This sucked me in like a soap opera and I couldn't get enough. I had laughter, tears of joy, tears of sadness, and even some anger. I was very sad to see it end, and wish there was more to see. My hats off the the writter, producers, directors, editors, actors,,and all who had a had in putting this all together. One of Patrick Swayze's best, and I heard him say, his favorite. This is a MUST SEE! for all!
