Amazon.com A remarkably ambitious and engrossing project, this 1978 television miniseries ran 26-and-a-half hours, cost a then-enormous $25 million, and involved 4 directors, 5 cinematographers, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 speaking parts. Based on James Michener's panoramic bestseller about the settling of the American West--as reflected in the history of a fictional town called Centennial, Colorado--the story begins in the late 18th century and ends with a typical 20th century conflict over land usage. Centennial, however, largely concentrates on various memorable frontiersmen, trappers, Indians, ranchers, cowboys, and farmers from long ago. Richard Chamberlain shines as the pioneer Alexander McKeag, Robert Conrad does some of his best work as French-Canadian Pasquinel, and performances by Alex Karras, Chad Everett, Sally Kellerman, Raymond Burr, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, and Dennis Weaver effectively add to a tapestry of adventure, tragedy, violence, and dubious Western progress. Produced at a time when TV networks were in the throes of acknowledging America's history of racial injustice, the program paints a starkly villainous portrait of opportunists exploiting and destroying Indians in the name of manifest destiny. While the project's great length might make one wary of diving in, Centennial is the sort of carefully paced drama that makes one care about the intertwined destinies of unique characters and how they illuminate America's past. --Tom Keogh

Best Mini Series Ever July 27, 2010 Pineapple Princess This sweeping saga of the settling of the wild west is, in my opinion, the best mini series ever made. I've watched it numerous times over the years and it never disappoints. With the exception of Sally Kellerman, it is perfectly cast. And how can you not love Pasquinel, or Levi Zendt, or Potatoes Brumbaugh? James Michener creates such rich, full characters that they actually seem like real people. And the story is engaging. It has everything - romance, intrigue, murder, and history.
ITS GOOD IF YOU GET IT RIGHT July 23, 2010 W. R. Furnas The series itself is exceptional. The casting is excellent. And the presentation of history is good.
NEGATIVES; The quality control was lacking due to the fact that one of the DVDs was not readable. So, the set was replaced by Amazon. It likewise had a defective DVD. Therefore, I had to play russian roulette with the two sets to get one good set.
I purchased Centennial to watch Centennial; not the trailer trash at the beginning of the series.
After it is all said and done I am glad that I have the series.
As Good as I Remembered It! July 22, 2010 Larry I had seen this years ago when it was shown live on TV and also read the book. My appreciation for one of James Michener's greatest historical novels hasn't dimenished. I was looking for something to make the dismal summer TV schedule somewhat more enjoyable, and this hit the spot!
This miniseries chronicaled the developement of the Centennial State starting with the French traders & trappers, and shows the emotions of the Native American peoples who inhabited the area long before the white man came. It shows how people settled the area from various backgrounds; some were honorable, others not. Settlers came there on horseback, by wagon train, and by rail. It tells the dramatic story of the first cattle drives, and shows conflicts between cattle ranchers, sheep herders, and farmers. It concludes with the taming of the wild west and the closing of the Americal Fronteer. What a Story!
My one complaint is that the producer of Centenial video did not identify which actor played what character. Most of the major players were famous enough that I, at least, recognized the faces. I found a listing of the major players by Goggling Centennial. It showed who played which character, but the minor players weren't identified. My biggest challenge was identifying Mark Harmon, now famous, but then just a young pup.
The vendor's service was excellent and I received my shipment in just a couple of days. Couldn't be happier with their delivery.
MASTERPIECE of the Old West July 20, 2010 James C. Ward (Tuscaloosa area AL, USA) quick review: I remember watching this series as child (on HBO or Showtime). The whole series played out over several months, as it was done in episodic format.
I haven't seen it again recently, but all I can tell you is that this is the greatest "Old West" story you are ever going to find on screen. "Lonesome Dove" is pretty awesome too- you should watch that as well.
You'll fall in love with all the great chracters, the interwoven stories between them, the brilliant cinematography, and the very high production values. They spent a lot of money on this series and you can tell.
Brilliantly done in every aspect.

A wonderful journey July 14, 2010 Don How heartwarming to see all those characters come to life again. When I saw this in the seventies it had quite an effect on me. I always wondered if it would ever come to the big screen or be shown again on tv. Thanks to this dvd I spent many hours trying to "steal " some time to sit and enjoy the journey and yes it is a long one. It was good to see some of the behind the scenes with the interviews on disc 2. Pasquinel, Mc Keag,Levi, Claybasket and Lucinda live on! This would make a wonderful gift.
